Building to a budget

We understand that building your first home is a big deal. In fact, a home is most likely the single biggest purchase you’ll ever make, and so it’s important that if you’re working to a budget, you stick to it.

Here we’ve put together some tips to help you:

  • Understand the effect of upgrades: Most of us understand that dining at a fine restaurant comes at a greater cost than eating at your local mall’s foodcourt, but understanding the differences in building materials and features is not so clear cut. For example, did you know a tiled shower can cost thousands more than standard acrylic showers, but that tile flooring comes in cheaper than most timber floors? Knowing what adds dollars to the overall cost of your build and by how much is critical in understanding where savings can be made. Our building tool is specially designed to show you just how different specifications can influence price for complete transparency, and we encourage you to explore the options to discover what suits your budget best.

  • Look for DIY opportunities: One of the best things about building a new home is all the hard work’s done for you, but sometimes budgets just don’t stretch far enough to have absolutely everything done, and that’s ok. In fact, if you’re handy, picking up the tools could save you thousands, and while there are some jobs you legally can’t do, trying your hand at landscaping, building a deck, or painting walls can be a good way of keeping your costs down. Just a word of warning though, don’t bite off more than you can chew because if your handy work isn’t so flash and repairs are needed, it could end up being costlier than if you’d just left it to the professionals in the first place.

  • And finally, lock it down: Asking for a fixed price contract takes the guesswork out of knowing what you’re in for. Our fixed price contracts protect you against budget over runs and ensure all specifications are clearly spelt out. Have more questions about how you can keep your build within budget?
